Chapter 13

Kariah’s dorm room was on the top floor of Thicket Tower. I texted Alaria on my slab a few minutes before, but when she replied…

Alaria: I’ve been here for an hour, my darling. We’re patiently awaiting those texts of yours… ;) x

So winky faces are still a thing on Elusix, I thought. What is Alaria expecting? Is she actually trying to set Kariah and me up? How is this even going to work?

Via a series of Arcane constructs and climbing I made my way up to the first floor of Thicket Tower high above the entrance, took the stairs and arrived at a final ladder that led through to a trapdoor in the ceiling.

Am I in the right place?

I moved to text Alaria again before hearing laughter behind the door.

I would know that laugh anywhere.

I knocked on the door, received the shout to come in, and headed inside.

I expected the untidy haven of a genius, and while this place still housed a genius, it definitely wasn’t untidy – just busy.

Shelves crammed with carefully-arranged books lined the walls, surrounding sparing pieces of furniture like islands among a sea of knowledge; a desk with a deck and a slab, a dresser, a closet, the door to the bathroom, and the bed set beneath the sloped ceiling of the tower’s spired roof, looking out over the rooftops of the campus.

Alaria and Kariah were on the bed, stretched out together and laughing.

‘He-e-ey,’ Alaria smiled. ‘We were wondering when you’d get here.’

‘I’m right on time.’

‘Your call, Alpha warlock,’ she replied, ‘but it’s your ass on the line that’s going to be using these bizarre spells.’

‘Don’t remind me,’ I said. ‘Let’s just hope they don’t backfire on me.’

‘I’m sure you’ll be fine,’ Kariah smiled. ‘In theory, anyway…’

‘How did you score this place?’ I asked Kariah.

‘It’s high-up so it stays out of the way of the water and vegetation on the floors below. Plus any water that I accidentally throw down isn’t a fuss to the Naturals down there. A perfect balance, really. Everybody knows that runes are my specialty, but they wanted me to be a part of the community, so they gave me this place.’

‘Not a bad deal,’ I said.

‘Yep,’ Kariah smiled. ‘It’s a great place, especially if you’re in the mood for making a little noise. As you can probably guess that’s not usually my type of night, but things can change…’

She pushed off the bed wearing nothing but a vest and a pair of shorts, her huge breasts bouncing up and down beneath the stretched cotton as the furred ears perched on her head twitched.

No way is this actually happening, I thought.

Kariah stopped right before me and looked down to my bag.

‘So… Are you ready?’ She asked.

‘What?’ I replied.

‘The notes? I’ve been running them over in my head all day. I couldn’t wait to see them again.’

‘Oh, right,’ I replied, casting aside the crazy thought and retrieving my caster’s journal. ‘Right here.’

Kariah took it off me and gave me a warm smile before spinning around and crossing to her desk.
